Labor Day Weekend

The second annual Jokara-Micheaux Film Festival is being billed as "The Event of the Year" and everyone is invited to come out Labor Day weekend and enjoy the activities.

"Celebrating Film Southern Style," a multitude of film industry related people will descend on Southwest Georgia to celebrate motion pictures and all that goes into the making of good, wholesome entertainment.

The activities will begin Friday, Aug. 31 with opening ceremonies and a southern style breakfast at the First Methodist Church on College Street.

The day will be filled with film screenings, workshops and a celebrity reception.

Court Square in Blakely will be the scene of the "It's Happening Here" Block Party Saturday, Sept. 1 featuring entertainment by country music band Sawyer Brown and Ronnie Robinson and the Legends.

The block party activities between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Saturday will include: a bed race (create a bed that will wow the crowds and win the race); Dream Big unveiling (a big surprise); famous Hollywood stuntman Kim Kahana demonstrating various movie stunts; hot dog and watermelon eating contests; horseshoes contest; Kids Corner: face painting; dunking booth; "Chalk it Up" contest; pony rides, petting zoo, pet parade; clowns and balloons; magic shows; Staples of the South: cotton and peanut exhibit; local artisans; local craft displays; raffles for local arts and crafts products; Bloomin' Market: flowers, produce, all kinds of Georgia products for sale; food booths.

Saturday evening a Black-Tie Awards Ceremony will be at 6:30 p.m. - 9:30 p.m. at the Jokara- Micheaux Production Studio in Colquitt

General admission to the Saturday block party and workshops is free. The Friday breakfast is $10 per person.

Film festival screenings are $5.00 a person and kids under five are free. Reserve a seat or table at the Black Tie Gala Awards Ceremony, $70 per person or $500 for an eight-person table.

Early and Miller Counties are working together to bring the film industry to Southwest Georgia, including movie making, wardrobe, casting and stunt firms. The key to this success has been a strong community partnership and an enthusiasm and belief that this part of Georgia is positioned for growth.

The Second Annual Jokara-Micheaux Film Festival will be hosted by HennyPenny Video/Television Production Company, Early County 2055, and the Southwest Georgia Film Commission.
